SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Aztec lacrosse team fell to No. 11 Florida 23-5 Friday afternoon. Sara Toner led the Aztecs with three goals.
The Gators (5-2) outshot the Aztecs (1-6) 27-15 and 33-14 in shots on goal. SDSU was 0-3 in extra-man opportunities, while Florida was 8-9.
Sara Toner had three goals on three shots with one free position goal. Nikki Seven had two goals on four shots. Goalkeeper Avery Dyer had seven saves and 14 goals allowed on 23 shots faced.
The Gators had 16 different athletes score, led by Gianna Monaco and Madison Waters with three goals each. Maggi Hall led the team with five assists. Liz Harrison had 12 draw controls. Goalkeeper Georgia Hoey had six saves and three goals allowed on nine shots faced.
"Florida is a very strong athletic team. I think we stepped on the field ready to play and that we didn't look scared. We had our moments but we keep beating ourselves on penalties. The fouls are killing us. It doesn't help when you play a top 20 team that's so skilled, but I think we're still taking away positive things from every time we step on the field," Head Coach Kylee White explained. "In the first quarter Avery (Dyer) did great. The second quarter was harder but we have to play better in front of her and not allow a team to just be on top of her."
STAT OF THE GAME
The Aztecs had a 0.933 shot on goal percentage.
THE NOTE
The Aztecs had more ground balls and saves than Florida.
