SAN DIEGO – San Diego State faces its first repeat conference opponent of the 2024 campaign this weekend when it travels to the Land of Enchantment for a three-game Mountain West series against New Mexico, April 26-28, at Santa Ana Star Field in Albuquerque, N.M.
The Aztecs and Lobos will square off in the series opener on Friday, beginning at 6 p.m. MT/5 p.m. PT, while Saturday's action commences at 2 p.m. MT/1 p.m. PT, followed by Sunday's finale, which is slated to get underway at noon MT/11 a.m. PT.
In addition to live stats, all three games will air live on the Mountain West Network, with links to both platforms available on GoAztecs.com.
SDSU is coming off an 11-2 loss at the University of San Diego on Tuesday, as the Toreros built an 8-0 advantage through the first three innings.
Third baseman Tino Bethancourt homered for the second straight game with solo shot in the eighth inning, giving him four round-trippers on the season.
Earlier, Jake Jackson garnered Mountain West Freshman of the Week accolades for the second time this year after a series of standout performances in four games during the period spanning April 15-21. The San Diego native led the Aztecs in several categories, including batting average (.688), on-base percentage (.722), hits (11) and RBIs (7). Not to be outdone, the SDSU newcomer struck out just once in 16 at-bats during that stretch.
Jackson set a career high with three hits at Long Beach State (April 16) and duplicated the feat in consecutive outings vs. No. 15/17 UC Irvine (April 19-20). The Aztec outfielder also established a collegiate best with four RBIs in that latter contest against the Anteaters to highlight a 3-for-4 evening at the plate.
Coupled with his first certificate on Feb. 19, Jackson's award on Monday gives the Aztecs nine MW weekly honors for the year after Colby Turner received the same recognition on five previous occasions (Feb. 26, March 4, March 18, April 1 and April 8). Jacob McCombs was also tabbed MW Freshman of the Week on April 15, while Jacob Riordan was named the league's Pitcher of the Week on April 1.
Since 2021, SDSU has won 16 of the last 18 meetings against New Mexico, including a series victory at Tony Gwynn Stadium, March 28-29. After dropping the opener by a 5-2 count, the Aztecs swept a doubleheader the following day, 8-6 and 13-0, punctuated by Jacob Riordan's no-hitter.
PROBABLE PITCHING MATCHUPS
For the seventh time in the last eight weekends, San Diego State is expected to utilize the starting rotation of Jacob Riordan, Omar Serrano and Xavier Cardenas III, while New Mexico is slated to pitch Dayne Pengelly and Brett Russell, respectively, with Sunday's starter to be determined.
A graduate transfer from Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Riordan (3-4) will be looking to snap a three-game losing streak on Friday after tossing the program's ninth no-hitter in SDSU's 13-0 victory over UNM in the nightcap of a doubleheader on March 29. The Aztec right-hander offset six walks and a hit batter against the Lobos by matching his season-best with eight strikeouts, giving San Diego State no-hitters in consecutive seasons for the first time in school history.
Saturday's projected starter Serrano (3-4) tied his career high with nine strikeouts in seven innings of work against UC Irvine on April 20, but did not factor in the decision after giving up three runs on eight hits and a pair of walks, as the Anteaters pulled off a comeback victory in the ninth.
The Downey, California, native picked up the win in the Scarlet and Black's 7-5 home triumph over UNLV on April 13, after allowing just one run on eight hits and two walks to go with five strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings.
Last month, Serrano put the brakes on a personal three-game slide with a victory in game one of the aforementioned twin-bill against New Mexico on March 29, The Aztec junior pitched seven scoreless innings of his own, overcoming four hits and one walk with five strikeouts, as the Scarlet and Black held off a late Lobo rally for an 8-6 decision.
Cardenas (1-5) is scheduled for his 10th start of the year on Sunday after recording one out in a relief appearance against New Mexico during seventh inning of a doubleheader on March 29. Earlier, the SDSU sophomore pitched a career-long seven-plus innings at Hawai'i on March 24, allowing three runs (two earned) on two hits and seven walks but did not factor in the decision after the Rainbow Warriors rallied for a walk-off 6-5 victory in 10 innings.
In his last start at UC Irvine on April 21, Cardenas yielded just one run on three hits to go with a trio of strikeouts but was lifted after walking five batters through 5 2/3 innings.

NEW MEXICO AT A GLANCE
