CRESWELL, Ore. -- The San Diego State men's golf team fell out of first place and is tied for second at 8-under-par 568 after two rounds of the Mountain West Championship Saturday on the par-72, 7,210-yard Emerald Valley Golf Club in Creswell, Oregon.
The Aztecs, who entered the tournament 31st in the latest Scoreboard powered by Clippd team rankings (April 24), shot a 2-under 286 in today's second round and is tied with San Jose State in second out of 11 teams at -8, two shots behind leading Colorado State (-10). Utah State is fourth at -6, while No. 20 New Mexico and Fresno State are tied for fifth at -4.
Junior Shea Lague (Jamul, Calif./Steele Canyon HS) leads SDSU in a tie for fourth out of 55 golfers at 4-under 140. After carding a 5-under 67 yesterday, Lague shot a 1-over 73 in today's round, slipping three places. Lague was unable to record a birdie after logging eight on Friday. Today he started with nine consecutive pars, bogeyed the par-4, 441-yard 10th and then finished with eight straight pars to close out his round.
Junior Justin Hastings (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands), meanwhile, is tied for 11th at -2 after matching Lague with a 73. Hastings, who opened with a 69 yesterday, had two birdies today and three bogeys.
Tyler Kowack (San Diego/Canyon Crest Academy) is tied for 20th at even-par 144 following a 2-under 70 on Saturday. Kowack was bogey free for his second round, sinking birdies on the par-4, 300-yard eighth and the par-4, 440-yard 16th, moving up 13 places on the day.
Sophomore Chanachon Chokprajakchat (Bangkok, Thailand) dropped 10 places into a tie for 28th at 1-over 145 after carding a 1-over 73 today. Chokprajakchat was assessed a two-stroke penalty after the round and had to take a double-bogey on the par-4, 390-yard 15th. The penalty, which wasn't called during the round, cost two strokes to San Diego State's score as the Aztecs would've entered the final round tied with CSU at -10. Officially, Chokprajakchat had two birdies, one bogey and the unfortunate double bogey.
Senior Jackson Moss (San Diego/Point Loma HS) rebounded from his 5-over 77 on Friday with a 2-under 70 today and is tied for 35th at 3-over 147. Moss opened with three birdies through his first seven holes before starting his back nine bogey-double bogey. He rebounded with birdies on the par-5, 610-yard 13th and the par-5, 577-yard 18th to sign for a 70, moving up 11 spots on the day.
Utah State's Julio Arronte leads after the 36 holes at -7, while Fresno State's Matthew Sutherland (-6), UNLV's Caden Fioroni (-5), SDSU's Lague, Colorado State's Christoph Bleier (-4), San Jose State's Xuan Luo (-4) round out the top 6.
San Diego State (-8) will tee off in Sunday's final around at 10:40 a.m. PT with leading Colorado State (-10) and San Jose State (-8).
