SAN DIEGO – The San Diego State men's tennis team returned to the Aztec Tennis Center to host Air Force on Thursday afternoon. After dropping the doubles point and the second singles match to finish, the Aztecs bounced back to win five singles matches, all in straight sets, en route to a 5-2 victory over the Falcons.
The Scarlet and Black climb to 12-5 and 1-2 in conference while the Falcons drop to 6-10 and 1-2 in Mountain West play.
In singles, Bora Sengul (6-5) played Phillip Deaton on the second court. Sengul cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 victory.
On the fourth court, Eugenio Gonzalez Fitzmaurice (9-4) battled Alec Fritzinger. He won by the same score as Sengul in a blowout win.
Playing on the bottom court, Alexander Mandma (9-3) went up against Nick Vroman. Mandma cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win.
In his match, Chikaya Sato (7-8) went up against AJ Moore on court No. 3. He came through with a 6-3, 6-2 victory to clinch an Aztec win.
Robin Parts (12-0) faced Jack Brown on the fifth court. After Parts won the first set 6-3, Brown was able to force a tiebreaker to stay alive in the second, but Parts took care of business in a 7-6 (7-3) win.
Last week's Mountain West Player of the Week, Johannes Seeman (4-10) faced Arjun Kersten on the top court. He was bested 6-0, 6-4 in straight sets.
In doubles, Gonzalez Fitzmaurice and Seeman (5-1) competed on the second court against Deaton and Kyle Garner. The Aztecs powered to a 6-1 win. Sato and Sengul (3-2) faced off against Moore and Tyler Leaird on the third court. The Aztecs were tripped up in a 6-3 defeat. Parts played with Mandma (7-3) on the top court. They faced Kersten and Brown and fell 6-3 as the Falcons clinched the doubles point.
San Diego State is back in action at the Aztec Tennis Center for a home match against New Mexico at 10 a.m. on Monday, April 8.
