CLOVIS, Calif. – San Diego State claimed a pair of medals on day two of the Mountain West Outdoor Championships on Friday. Jenna Fee Feyerabend started the day with a dominant victory in the heptathlon while Xiamara Young ended the day with a bronze medal in long jump. The team totaled 20 points on the day and qualified eight more for event finals tomorrow.
Feyerabend totaled 5,662 points across the seven events enroute to claiming the gold medal. She closed out the multis with wins in both long jump (18-9.75, 768 points) and javelin (136-11, 701 points) in the first two events on Friday before ending the heptathlon with a 2:21.40 and 805 points in the 800m run. With the victory, she becomes the third Aztec in conference history to win back-to-back titles in the event. The win also adds 10 points to San Diego State's overall score.
In the final event of the day, Young jumped her way into a podium spot on her sixth and final attempt of the night at 6.19m (20-3.75) for the bronze medal. The jump is a new personal best for the sophomore, ranks eighth in program history, and earned the team six points. The jump is also the furthest by an Aztec at the conference championship meet since the 2014 season.
Not far behind Young was Hannah Waller, who finished fifth at 6.16m (20-2.5) scoring four points for the Scarlet and Black. The event was Waller's second of the day after running the 100m dash earlier in the afternoon. Her time of 11.30 in the second heat was the fastest by a Mountain West athlete this season and qualified her for Saturday's final.
Jada Moore, Aji Mbye and Jada Pierre will be joining Waller in the 100m finals tomorrow as the Aztecs had four event finals qualifiers for the second day in a row. Moore won heat number three with a season best time of 11.46 seconds while Mbye ran an 11.62 to win heat number one. Pierre recorded the fourth fastest time of the day as the runner-up in heat two (behind Waller) at 11.57 seconds.
The 100m dash was Pierre's second qualifying event after an incredible showing in the 100m hurdles earlier in the day. In a heat two victory, she crossed the line in 13.26 seconds etching her name as the ninth fastest in program history. Her time was 0.15 seconds ahead of the next fastest hurdler, her teammate Charlize James. James ran a season best 13.41 to win heat number one as the duo will race for gold tomorrow afternoon.
Shaquena Foote and Sydney Bentley will also race in a final tomorrow as the pair qualified in the 400m dash. Foote dominated heat number one, crossing the line in 52.99 seconds ultimately recording the second quickest time of the day. Bentley claimed the final qualifying spot with a season best 55.26 seconds. The race was just her second 400m in over a year after missing significant time due to injury.
The final day of the Mountain West Championships will begin tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Veteran's Memorial Stadium with a champion crowned just after 9 p.m. Overall, there will be 22 Aztecs in action tomorrow across 12 events to wrap up the weekend.
