WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The San Diego State men's golf team is in a three-way tie for eighth place after the first day of the NCAA West Lafayette Regional on Monday. The Aztecs, who are 35th in the latest Scoreboard ratings powered by Clippd, shot a 10-over-par 298 on the par-72, 7,465-yard Kampen-Cosler Course in West Lafayette, Indiana.
SDSU is tied with No. 47 Indiana and Southern Illinois in eighth out of 13 teams, one shot behind No. 37 Mississippi State (+9) and Colorado State (+9). No. 2 Vanderbilt leads the way after one round at 11-under, while No. 11 Arizona (-5), No. 30 Purdue (-4), No. 15 Florida (+1) and No. 23 New Mexico (+2) round out the top 5. The top-five squads and lowest individual not on those teams from the West Lafayette Regional will advance to the NCAA Championships, slated for May 24-29, at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in nearby Carlsbad, California, hosted by Texas.
Sophomore Tyler Kowack (San Diego/Canyon Crest Academy) and senior Jackson Moss (San Diego/Point Loma HS) are tied for 28th out of 75 golfers at 2-over 74, while junior Justin Hastings (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands) and sophomore Chanachon Chokprajakchat (Bangkok, Thailand) are a shot back in a tie for 40th at +3.
Kowack had three birdies and five bogeys for his 74, while Moss had three birdies, one bogey and two double bogeys. Hastings and Chokprajakchat, meanwhile, sank two birdies with five bogeys.
Junior Shea Lague (Jamul, Calif./Steele Canyon HS) will look to bounce back after carding a 10-over 82 on Monday, which has him alone in solo 69th place.
Wisconsin's Cameron Huss leads the field after firing a 6-under 66 while competing as an individual. Vanderbilt's Gordon Sargent is in second at -5 with teammate Cole Sherwood and Arizona's Johnny Walker tied for third at -3.
SDSU begins its second round at 8:25 a.m. ET (5:25 a.m. PT) Tuesday, teeing off from the first hole with Colorado State and Indiana.
