SAN DIEGO – The San Diego State women’s soccer team had a tough test on Thursday night against the nation’s No. 2-ranked team, the Stanford Cardinal, on the SDSU Sports Deck. Kali Trevithick scored on a penalty kick in the 40th minute for her first goal of the season and the first allowed goal this season by the Cardinal but it was not enough in a 3-1 defeat.

In the 40th minute, Trevithick was set up with a penalty kick against Stanford’s keeper Haley Craig, who had a clean sheet in 2024. Trevithick changed that with a low shot into the right side of the net to even the score at a goal apiece.

Stanford’s (3-0-0)first half goal came early with Jasmine Aikey finding Shae Harvey just 71 seconds into the match after the Cardinal’s first corner kick. Aztec goalie Alexa Madueno was able to keep Stanford from adding on in the first half with saves in the seventh and 16th minutes but both offenses were fairly quiet for the majority of the first 45 minutes. Outside of the goal, SDSU (1-1-1) took two shots, neither on target. Shortly after her goal, Trevithick picked up a yellow card in the 43rd minute.

Stanford added on quickly after the break, with Andrea Kitahata scoring just 47 seconds into the second half on a pass from Samantha Williams. The Cardinal extended their lead to two goals on their next shot as Charlotte Kohler found the back of the net in the 50th minute.

Alexys Ocampo was given a yellow card just seconds after the goal and neither team would score again the rest of the match. Madueno had two more saves, coming in the 59th and 74th minutes. Denise Castro had San Diego State’s first shot on goal from the field in the 85th minute but Craig made the save.

The Aztecs finished the match with more saves (4-1) and the Cardinal had more shots (20-10), shots on goal (7-2) and corner kicks (9-1) while each team totaled six fouls.

Madueno’s four saves moved her up to 319 for her career, just 19 behind Aubree Southwick’s program record of 338.

Trevithick’s goal moved her into first on the team with three points following an assist against Cal State Bakersfield. The goal was the first time the Aztecs scored against Stanford in their last three matches and sixth total San Diego State goal in the teams’ 11 meetings. The last time SDSU got on the board against the Cardinal was on August 30, 2009, in a 5-2 defeat. In addition, Trevithick scored the first San Diego State goal against Stanford in the fourth meeting in San Diego. The goal also marked the Aztecs’ second goal in four matches against top two-ranked teams in the Mountain West era (since 1999).

The Aztecs will be back at the SDSU SportsDeck on Saturday, August 31, for a 7 p.m. match against Oklahoma State, who is currently ranked 17th in the nation. Admission is free and the match will be streamed on the Mountain West Network.
