SAN DIEGO – The San Diego State women’s soccer is hitting the road for the first time this season for a match at No. 16-ranked Texas on Thursday, September 5, in Austin. The match, which will take place in Mike A. Myers Stadium & Soccer Field, is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT (4 p.m. PT) and will be broadcast on SEC Network+.
San Diego State (1-2-1) is in the midst of arguably its toughest stretch of matches in the Mountain West era as Thursday’s match will mark the first time since at least 1999 that SDSU is facing three consecutive ranked opponents. The Aztecs outshot then No. 11 Oklahoma State 20-14 on Saturday but finished behind in goals, 3-0. The week before, SDSU suffered a 3-1 defeat in which Kali Trevithick scored the first goal allowed by then No. 2 Stanford all season.
The Longhorns (4-0-1) defeated Central Michigan 2-0 in their most recent match on September 1. This season, Texas has defeated Houston, Cal State Bakersfield, Southern Methodist and Central Michigan by a combined score of 13-3 and faced No. 24 Iowa in a match that finished scoreless. Texas won a pair of matches in the NCAA Tournament last season before falling to eventual national champion Florida State.
The Aztecs won the lone previous meeting between the two teams 1-0, on October 9, 2011, in Austin on a game-winner by Sophie Metz in the 44th minute. Both teams had shutout wins at home against Cal State Bakersfield this season with SDSU winning 3-0 on August 15 and Texas winning 4-0 on August 18. San Diego State is 5-5 all-time against current Southeastern Conference member schools. In addition to the win over Texas, SDSU has taken down Mississippi twice and Kentucky and Oklahoma once each.
SDSU will be back on the Sports Deck for its remaining three nonconference matches over the next couple of weeks. The Aztecs host UC San Diego on September 12, Eastern Washington on September 15 and Utah Valley on September 22. The UC San Diego match will be at 7 p.m. while the other two will be at noon. All three matches will be broadcast on the Mountain West Network and attendance is free.
