Aztecs Win at CBU 2-1

With nine points and a perfect 3-0-0 record, the Aztecs are alone in first place in the WAC.

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The San Diego State men’s soccer team (6-4-3, 3-0-0) won their third straight match (all on the road) to begin WAC play with a 2-1 win at California Baptist Saturday evening. With nine points and a perfect 3-0-0 record, the Aztecs are alone in first place in the WAC.

“To beat the two-time defending conference champs on their field is a huge accomplishment,” Head coach Ryan Hopkins said after the match. “We executed the game play to a T.’

The Aztecs allowed just three shots on goal and have now given up just six shots on goal through their first three matches in conference play.

SDSU got off to a slow start and was outshot 7-0 in the first 15 minutes of the match, but the Aztecs only allowed one shot on goal for the remaining 75 minutes.

SDSU’s first shot came in the 27th minute and their first great look came in the 34th minute when Robbie Matei had a clear shot that was saved with an excellent effort from the Lancer goalkeeper.

The Aztecs got on the board in the 60th minute when Terence Okoeguale bent one in on a free kick from the corner.

Eight minutes later, Andre Puente scored his first goal as an Aztec. Tristan Viviani sent a ball into the box that Cianole Nguepissi heel flipped through a crowded box to find Puente.

The Lancers ended SDSU’s shutout with a goal from Luis Borrero in the 87th minute.

The Aztecs allowed just three shots on goal and just one over the final 75 minutes.

THE NOTE

This is the first time San Diego State has won three straight road matches since 1989.
