TEMPE, Ariz. – San Diego State men’s tennis completed day one of the ITA Southwest Regional Championships in Tempe, Ariz. on Thursday where three Aztecs competed in the singles qualifying rounds. Mathieu Josserand and Alexander Mandma advanced through to Friday’s main draw.
After a first-round bye, Josserand and Mandma each picked up qualifying wins to earn their spots in the round of 64. Up against Cal Poly’s John Cross, Josserand took the first set 6-3. Dropping the second set 4-6, the senior bounced back with a 6-3 win to take the match. Mandma took on Sean Ferguson, another Mustang of Cal Poly, and claimed a two-set victory 6-4, 6-4.
Freshman Louis Chusseau fell short in his first-round matchup against ASU’s Finn Willwerth, who took the match 6-4, 6-4.
The three Aztecs will compete in the doubles round of 64 on Friday alongside teammate Eugenio Gonzalez Fitzmaurice, beginning at 9 a.m. The singles round of 64 will follow at 10 a.m., featuring Josserand, Mandma and Gonzalez Fitzmaurice.
