SAN DIEGO – The ITA Southwest Regional Championships got underway at the Aztec Tennis Center on Thursday with the singles qualifying rounds. SDSU's Zoe Olmos and Vesa Gjinaj advanced their way through to Friday’s main draw.
Olmos took both her matches in straight sets to earn her spot in Friday’s round of 64. The senior took down Pamela Badillo Hernandez of Long Beach State in a 6-3, 6-1 victory, followed by a 6-4, 6-2 win over Fullerton’s Mariia Nikitash.
After a first-round bye, Gjinaj picked up a qualifying win against CSUN’s Emma Moratalla Sanz, who she defeated 6-2, 6-7 (3-7), 6-2.
Charlotte Roesch advanced through the first round with a victory over Carolyna Fowler of UCI. After dropping the first set 3-6, Roesch bounced back with two hard-fought sets, winning 7-5, 7-6 (7-1). The freshman came up short in the second round against Cal Poly’s Alexandra Ozerets who took the match 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.
Olmos and Gjinaj will join Gloria Alogo, Jo-Yee Chan and Ninon Martinache in the singles round of 64 on Friday, beginning at 10 a.m. following the doubles round of 64 at 9 a.m, which will feature all six Aztecs.
