ARLINGTON, TEXAS – Beto Apolinar of the San Diego State men’s soccer team was named the WAC Defensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday afternoon.
Apolinar, the team captain, had an assist on Robbie Matei’s game-winning goal in SDSU’s 1-0 win at Utah Tech Sunday. As a defensive midfielder, he played a huge part in the Aztecs’ earning a pair of 1-0 shutouts last week and limiting UNLV and Utah Tech to a combined three shots on goal.
Apolinar won over 90 percent of his tackles and had a 94 percent loose ball recovery rate.
This is the second WAC Player of the Week award for the Aztecs this season. Robbie Matei was named the Offensive Player of the Week two weeks ago.
San Diego State plays at California Baptist Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
