SAN DIEGO – San Diego State men's tennis completed day one of a split weekend in Southern California on Friday, led by Denis Maijorov at the Dennis Rizza Intercollegiate Classic.
Maijorov claimed the only win of the day for the Aztecs in a round of 16 matchup against UC Santa Barbara's Gustav Thielgaard in Rolling Hills Estates, Calif. The freshman won by a score of 6-2, 6-4.
Mathieu Josserand, Alexander Mandma and Liam Spiers dropped their first round matches at the Jack Kramer Club:
Liu Lucca (UCSB) def. Josserand 6-1, 6-2
Diogo Morais (UCSB) def. Mandma 6-1, 6-1
Charlie Underwood (UCSB) def. Spiers 6-1, 6-2
At the Triton Fall Invitational on the Northview Tennis Courts in La Jolla, Philipp Bosse, Paul Janson and Marc Kleber were bested in the first round, with two of the matches going to a deciding third set:
Ryan Torres (UC Davis) def. Bosse 1-6, 6-3, 6-1
Sam De Vries (UC Davis) def. Janson 6-1, 6-1
Kurt Miller (UC Davis) def. Kleber 6-7, 6-1, 6-1
The Aztecs will be back in action for day two of both tournaments on Saturday.
