LOGAN, Utah — Marquez Cooper made history on Saturday afternoon, but the Aztecs dropped their final road game, 41-20, at Utah State. The senior transfer became the 23rd in NCAA history to surpass 5,000 career rushing yards.
Cooper totaled 118 yards in the loss, his fifth 100-yard game of the season and 22nd of his career.
San Diego State (3-8, 2-4 Mountain West) jumped out to an early 13-0 lead on a pair of Gabriel Plascencia field goals and Cooper's tenth rushing touchdown of the season.
However, the Aztecs could not hang on as Utah State (4-7, 3-3 MW) scored two touchdowns in the final two minutes of the first half to carry a one-point lead into halftime.
After outgaining the Aggies in the first half, the Aztecs were outmatched in the second half being outscored 27-7 and a yardage differential of USU's 318 to SDSU's 177.
San Diego State found the end zone in the final minute of the game as Javance Tupou'ata-Johnson threw a 12-yard pass to Mekhi Shaw to reach the 41-20 final score.
San Diego State will look to end the season on a high note hosting Air Force for the season finale at Snapdragon Stadium next weekend. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. PT on FS1.
