SAN DIEGO – San Diego State’s Valentina Lopez Arevalo was named Mountain West Diver of the Week after helping the Aztecs to a strong second-place finish at the Hawkeye Invitational, Nov. 21-23, in Iowa City, Iowa. The announcement was made Tuesday from the league office in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
With her honor, Lopez Arevalo garnered her second conference weekly accolade this season and eighth of her career, giving the Aztecs four MW awards season.
A native of Zapopan, Jalisco, Mexico, Lopez Arevalo surpassed NCAA zone qualifying standards in all three diving events last weekend in a stacked field that featured six Power 5 schools in the nine-team field.
Lopez Arevalo was the lone SDSU diver to advance to the “A” finals of the 1-meter springboard, where she placed seventh with a season-high total of 283.65 points. The Aztec senior also took home the crown in the 3-meter consolation finals the following day with another season-best score of 312.30 points.
Lopez Arevalo then wrapped up a highly productive weekend by winning a silver medal in the platform “A” finals with 285.00 points in her first appearance from that height this season, helping the Scarlet and Black vault one spot in the team standings into second place.
Lopez Arevalo and her diving colleagues will return to the competition well next month at the Riverside Diving Invitational, Dec. 6-7, in Riverside, California.
