RENO, Nev. – San Diego State track and field completed day one of the Silver and Blue Invitational in Reno, Nev. on Friday afternoon. Eighteen Aztecs made their 2024 debuts headlined by a pair of top ten times from Shaquena Foote and Aji Mbye in the 60m dash.

“We had a very good season opener on the sprints and hurdles side today,” said head coach Shelia Burrell. “The new facility in Reno is top notch and fast. Our jumps squad had some decent short approach jumps in preparation for their full jump debut in a couple of weeks. We’re looking forward to tomorrow’s events to wrap up our first weekend of competition.”

Foote and Mbye were two of four Aztecs to qualify for the 60m dash finals finishing third and fourth, respectively. Foote was consistent with a 7.35 in both the prelims and finals which ranks sixth on SDSU’s all-time list while Mbye improved from a 7.50 prelim to a 7.36 finals time that ranks seventh fastest in program history.

Mikaela Warr impressed in her first career collegiate race, running a 7.48 in the 60m prelims and qualifying for the final. The freshman followed up with a 7.50 in the final for a sixth-place finish.

Hannah Waller had the fastest time among the Scarlet and Black in the event with the second fastest time of 7.34 in the prelim race, but she did not compete in the final.

The Scarlet and Black qualified three in the 60m hurdle finals on Friday as well. Jada Pierre posted a personal best 8.41 in the final to finish as the runner-up with Charlize James right behind at 8.47 for third. James won the preliminary with a time of 8.40 seconds.

Mia Reid was the third Aztec in the final, finishing eighth in the final with a time of 9.19 seconds after an 8.78 in the preliminary race.

In pole vault, San Diego State claimed the top two spots on the day clearing 3.75m (12-3.5). Sophomore Jordan Leveque cleared the height on her first attempt to earn first. Freshman Peyton Bedrosian clipped the bar on her first try at 3.75m before clearing it on her second making her the runner-up in her collegiate debut.

Waller also led the team in long jump, leaping 5.93m (19-5.5) to finish fourth overall. In her collegiate debut, Pavana Nagaraj jumped 5.79m (19-0) to finish seventh in her first ever college event.

San Diego State will wrap up its first indoor meet of the season tomorrow. The first field event of the day will be shot put at 10 a.m. and the first track event featuring SDSU will be at 12:35 p.m.
