LAKE SHERWOOD, Calif. -- The San Diego State men’s golf team shot a 6-over-par 290 in Tuesday’s second round to slip into a tie for second at the Southwestern Invitational. The Aztecs, who are 32nd in the latest NCAA computer rankings, are now tied with No. 5 Texas at 2-under 566 on the par-71, 7,076-yard Sherwood Country Club, two shots behind No. 44 UNLV (-4).

SDSU was forced to count all four of its players in Tuesday’s round after freshman Harry Takis (Brisbane, Australia) was unable to play due to an injury. Senior Justin Hastings (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands) and junior Chanachon Chokprajakchat (Bangkok, Thailand) carded matching even-par 71s, while junior Tyler Kowack (San Diego/Canyon Crest Academy) shot a 73 and sophomore Nathan Sampson (Temecula, Calif.) had a 75 to put San Diego State at 6-over for the day.

Chasing UNLV (-4), the Aztecs (-2) and Texas (-2) on Wednesday will be No. 15 Vanderbilt (+1), No. 19 Pepperdine (+3) and No. 14 Florida (+6). Other notable programs outside the top 6 include No. 43 USC (+10), No. 24 Duke (+13), No. 10 UCLA (+23) and No. 11 Arizona (+28).

Hastings and Chokprajakchat each shot even-par and are tied for seventh out of 75 entrants at 2-under 140. Hastings had three birdies and three bogeys today, while Chokprajakchat had two birdies and two pars.

Sampson, who fired a 4-under 67 on Monday, finished with a 4-over 75 today and is tied for ninth at even-par. Sampson was even par through 12 holes with three birdies and three bogeys, but bogeyed four of his final six holes to settle for a 75.

Kowack is tied for 41st at +6 following a 2-over 73 today. Kowack got to 3-under following his fourth birdie of the day at the par-5, 536-yard 11th and then backed that up with three straight pars. However, he bogeyed two of his final four holes and double bogeyed the par-3, 232-yard 17th to finish with a 73.

UNLV’s Zach Little and Texas’ Christiaan Maas lead the way at -5 with a four-way tie for second at -3.

SDSU plays its final round with UNLV and Texas, beginning on the first hole at 11:01 a.m. PT.
