Aztecs Host Utah State Saturday

The San Diego State women’s basketball team hosts Utah State Saturday at 1 p.m. SDSU beat the Aggies 85-66 in Logan on Jan. 18. They made 12 threes, six of which came from freshman Nat Martinez.

SAN DIEGO – The San Diego State women’s basketball team hosts Utah State Saturday at 1 p.m. SDSU beat the Aggies 85-66 in Logan on Jan. 18. They made 12 threes, six of which came from freshman Nat Martinez.

 

Aztec Tidbits

  • SDSU lost at first place UNLV 75-65 Wednesday night. It was just the third time the Aztecs lost when scoring 60 or more points this season (13-3).
  • Wednesday was the Aztecs’ fifth straight game against a team that is ahead of them or equal to them in the standings. They went 3-2 in those games.
  • SDSU is 8-3 on the road. Their eight road wins are SDSU’s most in a season since 2012-13 (10). Their 73% win percentage on the road would be their highest since the 1996-97 season.
  • The Aztecs are holding opponents to 60.9 points, 39.5% shooting from the field and 29.7% from three, all of which are top three in the Mountain West.
  • The Aztecs have held their opponent under 60 points 12 times (11-1) and under 40% shooting in 13 games (11-2).
  • SDSU commits just 13.1 turnovers per game (29th in the nation).
  • The Aztecs are 11th in the nation in bench points per game (28.6). 41.8% of SDSU's scoring comes from their bench.
  • 10 Aztecs average at least 10 minutes per game and seven different players have led the team in scoring in a game.

  • SDSU’s 11 non-conference wins were their most since the 1983-84 team that went 13-0.
  • The Aztecs have six players in their 4th year or later, five of them in the 5th year or later (Clark, Fiso, Green, Quezada and Villalobos).

Player Notes

  • Veronica Sheffey scored a season-high 20 points and made a career-high four three-pointers at UNLV Wednesday. Her eight made field goals tied her career-high that she set against the Aztecs last year while playing for the University of San Diego.
  • Sheffey is averaging a team-high 13.0 points per game in conference play. She is shooting 48% from the field and 53% from three (10-for-19).
  • Sheffey has scored in double-digits 16 times, the most on the team.
  • Sheffey is 45-for-50 (90%) from the line during conference play, second in the Mountain West.
  • Adryana Quezada is one of three players nationally to have over 1,500 points & 700 rebounds while shooting at least 50% from the field and 75% from the line.
  • Kim Villalobos has played in a school record 145 games.
  • Villalobos has only missed five games in her career and has played in 104 straight and made 95 consecutive starts.
  • Villalobos had a season-high 17 points at UNLV Wednesday. It was her 56th time scoring in double-digits.
  • Villalobos is one of five players in the nation with at least 1,100 points, 750 rebounds, 200 assists, 175 steals and 100 blocks in her career.
  • Villalobos is in the top ten in SDSU history in games, rebounds and blocks.
  • Nat Martinez was predicted to win Mountain West Freshman of the Year by CBS Sports’ Kelly Burke.
  • Martinez is shooting 44.4% from three on the year.
  • Martinez has won the Mountain West Freshman of the Week three times. The Aztecs have won a conference-best five MW FOTW awards (Naomi Panganiban, 2). Combined with the men’s program, SDSU has won the award 11 times, the next closest is CSU with five.
  • Cali Clark is fourth in the nation among active players in rebounds per minute (minimum 100 games). She was second in the nation last year.
  • In Clark’s 109 games at Colorado State, she had double-digits rebounds six times and one double-double. This season she has 10 games with 10 or more rebounds and six double-doubles.
  • Clark is third in the Mountain West in blocks and rebounds.
  • Erin Houpt is the only player in the nation to shoot at least 40% from three and 90% from the line in her career.
  • Houpt is 92.7% (164-177) from the line in her career, the best in the nation (minimum 150 made).
  • Houpt’s 42.0% career three-point percentage is 9th in the nation (minimum 150 made).
  • Houpt is shooting 46.3% (25-for-54) from three this season, which would be a school record (minimum 50 attempts).
  • Naomi Panganiban has won Mountain West Freshman of the Week twice.
  • Meghan Fiso tied a career-high with three assists at UNLV Wednesday.
