SAN DIEGO - The No. 23/23 San Diego State softball team will return to Fullerton, California, this weekend to play in the Judi Garman Classic. The Aztecs played in the event in 2015 and 2008 and have a 7-2 record.
SDSU opens the event on Friday with a pair of day games against Weber State and Notre Dame. On Saturday, San Diego State has a night game against the Utah Utes. The Aztecs will wrap up the weekend with two more games on Sunday morning. In those games, they will battle the No. 12/10 Arizona Wildcats followed by the host of the tournament, the Cal State Fullerton Titans.
The Aztecs lead the all-time series against Weber State 4-3. All seven of those games took place between the 2016 and 2022 seasons. SDSU has found a lot of success historically against Notre Dame, winning five of the teams’ six total meetings, all of which have come since the 2012 season.
SDSU has just a 24-52 record all-time against former Mountain West opponent Utah. However, since the Utes left the Mountain West before the 2012 season, the Aztecs have won two of the teams’ three regular season games. They also met in the 2023 NCAA Super Regionals in Salt Lake City with SDSU winning the first game before the Utes took the next two to advance to the WCWS.
The Aztecs are just 10-28 against Arizona and haven’t won since 2008. SDSU is 28-54 against Cal State Fullerton but prior to the start of this season, had won the last three meetings and six of the last eight. The Titans won 7-3 when the teams played on Feb. 7.
Last week, SDSU fell 7-2 to No. 19/19 Oregon. The Aztecs recovered and finished the week with five straight wins against UC Santa Barbara, UC Riverside, Saint Mary’s, Hawai’i and California Baptist.
