SAN DIEGO – San Diego State lacrosse kicked off conference play on Saturday, welcoming Colorado to Aztec Field in the team’s first Big 12 matchup of the season. The Aztecs fought hard on both sides of the field, but came up short 16-12.
The Aztecs fall to 5-6 overall and 0-1 in the Big 12 and the Buffs improve to 5-5, 1-0 in the league.
Sara Toner was the leading scorer for the Scarlet and Black, finding the back of the net three times to tie her season high, while also adding one assist. Two of her goals were off free position shots. Bella Tan, Kate Christos and Meghan McLaughlin each added two goals and Frankie Garcia, Matty Spaeth and Presley Mitchell had one apiece. Garcia also tallied three assists, matching her career high.
Colorado’s Madeline Pisani led all scorers with eight goals and one assist. Lily Assini posted four, Kendall Havill recorded two and Maddie Shoup and Jaimey Hill each had one.
Freshman goalkeeper Grace Moore played 38 minutes in the cage, which is her most of the season. She recorded a career-high 11 saves off 31 shots faced.
San Diego State dominated in ground balls, picking up 24 to Colorado’s 15. Christos led the Aztecs with five, setting a new career high.
Redshirt freshman Sophia Miller also earned a career-high six draw controls.
The Buffs got off to a hot start, outscoring the Aztecs 12-5 in the first half. The Scarlet and Black rallied in the second half, allowing only four goals while putting seven on the board, outscoring Colorado 5-2 in the fourth quarter. The late surge was not enough to push past the Buffs, who earned a 16-12 victory.
“We played to the game plan,” said Head Coach Kylee White. “I think we did a good job of taking our break at halftime, resting ourselves and coming out with more fire and a belief that we just needed to score one goal at a time. They just kept fighting. It’s hard when you’re down by that much at the half, but I just give them a ton of credit for continuing to battle.”
Next up, the Aztecs hit the road for their final non-conference game of the season, taking on Stetson in Deland, Fla. at 3 p.m. on Wednesday before heading to Gainesville to face No. 7 Florida at 7 a.m. on Saturday.
