SAN DIEGO – San Diego State women’s tennis returns to action on Friday, welcoming the University of San Diego to the Aztec Tennis Center for a 4 p.m. matchup.

The Toreros (5-7, 0-0 WCC) are the fifth ranked opponent the Aztecs have faced thus far in their non-conference schedule, coming in at No. 43 in this week’s ITA national team rankings. San Diego has wins over UC Santa Barbara, Penn, Arizona, Denver and Hawai’i, but has lost two straight to Arizona State and Washington.

The Aztecs are 6-4 overall and 0-0 in the Mountain West. Having won their last two matchups against UCLA and Hawai’i, the Scarlet and Black made their way into the national rankings for the first time this season, coming in at No. 55.

Last time out, San Diego State captured a hard-fought 4-3 win over No. 30 UCLA, rallying from a 3-1 deficit with three-set victories on courts two, four and five. After dropping the doubles point, freshman Liisa Varul evened the score with a 6-2, 6-2 win on court six. The Bruins jumped out to a 3-1 lead, taking courts one and three. Ninon Martinache inched the Scarlet and Black closer, winning court four 6-1, 0-6, 6-4. Jo-Yee Chan captured another must-win for San Diego State, taking court two 6-2, 6-7 (6-8), 6-4. Senior Zoe Olmos clinched the ranked win for the Aztecs, earning a 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-3) victory on court five.

The Aztecs are halfway through their six-match home stand. Following Friday’s contest, the Scarlet and Black will face another ranked opponent, taking on No. 10 Duke at the Aztec Tennis Center on March 13 at 11 a.m.
