This is the first meeting between the two programs in school history. The Aztecs are 2-1 in games played at Snapdragon Stadium. In 2023, the Scarlet and Black took down Kent State 15-9 and High Point 17-9. Last season, the Aztecs fell 17-9 to Arizona State.
Currently 1-2 on the season and 0-0 in the AAC, the Pirates won their season opener 12-8 at Queens, but have lost their last two contests, falling 12-7 at Elon and 15-14 in overtime at Coastal Carolina.
Leading the East Carolina offense is midfielder Kayla Wilkes. The junior leads the Pirates in points with nine on the season off nine goals. Emma Magazu has also been a key player for East Carolina in the midfield, recording a team-high seven ground balls and six caused turnovers. Another player to watch is draw specialist Grace McCarthy, who has earned 17 draw controls through the first three games.
The Aztecs enter the matchup 4-3 in non-conference play. After starting the season with four straight wins, the Scarlet and Black have come up short against three tough opponents in Denver, No. 22 USC and Oregon, and are looking to get back in the win column in front of a home crowd on Monday night.
Last time out, the Aztecs got off to a hot start on the road against the Ducks, but couldn’t overcome a second half comeback by Oregon, falling 17-16. Seven Aztecs scored, once again led by Bella Tan, who found the goal five times. It’s the fourth time this season the redshirt freshman has scored five or more goals in a game, and she currently leads the team with 26 on the season.
Caitlin Boughton played 51 minutes in the cage and recorded a season high 14 saves off 36 shots faced. The junior has 60 saves through the first seven games.
The Aztec offense leads the Big 12 in goals per game with a 16.29 average. The Aztecs also have a sizable lead in ground balls per game in the conference, averaging 23 per game, followed by Cincinnati with a 17.75 average.
Following Monday’s game, San Diego State will return to Aztec Field to host No. 21 Ohio State at noon.
