COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – San Diego State softball’s Jazmin Williams garnered Mountain West Player of the Week accolades and Cece Cellura has been named the Mountain West Pitcher of the Week, the league announced Monday. The players earned the honors for their play in the team’s three-game sweep of UNLV over the weekend.
San Diego State (27-14, 11-5) opened the weekend with an 8-0 win over the Rebels on Friday in a game that lasted just five innings due to the run rule. On Saturday, the Aztecs fell behind 4-0 after the top of the first inning but shut UNLV out the rest of the game and scored the final twelve runs, culminating in Shannon Cunningham’s pinch-hit walk-off grand slam, in a 12-4, five-inning victory. On Sunday, the game lasted the full seven innings, but the Aztecs shut out the Rebels in a 4-0 result.
Williams started all three games. She began Friday’s contest in right field before moving to third base during the game and staying there the remainder of the weekend. On the week, Williams hit .625 with a 1.500 slugging percentage and a 2.125 OPS. To reach those numbers, she went 5-for-8 with seven RBIs, three runs scored, two home runs, a double and a stolen base. In Friday’s series opener, Williams hit a go-ahead grand slam in the first inning to provide four of SDSU's eight total runs in the game before singling and stealing second base in her other plate appearance. She followed it up with an RBI single in the first inning on Saturday before she doubled and scored in the fifth. On Sunday, Williams launched a two-run homer in the fifth inning to put the Aztecs up 4-0.
Cellura pitched on Saturday and Sunday. Across those games, she posted a 0.00 ERA, 0.23 WHIP and INF K:BB ratio while going 2-0. She tossed 8.2 scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and no walks while striking out five hitters. Cellura entered the game on Saturday with the Aztecs down 4-2 and runners on second and third with one out in the second inning and escaped the jam. She would pitch the final 3.2 innings and allow just one baserunner, who reached via a hit by pitch. On Sunday, Cellura took over in the third inning and finished the game, throwing the final five innings and limiting the Rebels to just a single and a double.
Williams’ award is the first weekly award of her career. Meanwhile, Cellura is winning MW Pitcher of the Week for the third time this season (February 17 and March 31) and fourth time in her career (April 15, 2024). These are the Aztecs’ sixth and seventh weekly awards this season as Cali Decker (March 17) and Lala Macario (February 17) have each been named Player of the Week and Dee Dee Hernandez (February 24) also brought home Pitcher of the Week honors.
This weekend, San Diego State will take its final road trip of the regular season. The Aztecs travel to Idaho to play the Boise State Broncos on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Thursday and Friday’s games are slated to start at 6 p.m. MT/5 p.m. PT while Saturday’s game is scheduled for noon MT/11 a.m. PT. All three contests will be broadcast on the Mountain West Network.
