SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -- The San Diego State men’s golf team slipped into second place at 4-under-par 696 following an 8-over 358 in the second round of the Western Intercollegiate on Tuesday.
SDSU, which is 18th in the latest NCAA Scoreboard computer rankings, only trails No. 22 Pepperdine (-6) through 36 holes on the par-70, 6,486-yard Pasatiempo Golf Club. No. 21 Arizona is third at -3, while No. 42 Stanford and Nihon Univ. are each tied for fourth at -1.
Junior Chanachon Chokprajakchat (Bangkok, Thailand) leads San Diego State in a tie for eighth out of 91 competitors at 4-under 136. Chokprajakchat shot his second straight under-par round with a 69 today, making four birdies with a bogey and a double bogey.
Freshman Harry Takis (Brisbane, Australia) is tied for 11th at -3 after carding a 1-over 71 on Tuesday. Takis got to 2-under with a birdie on the par-4, 346-yard seventh, but logged three bogeys and no more birdies the rest of the way for his 71.
Senior Justin Hastings (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands) is a stroke back of Takis in a tie for 14th at -2. Hastings had a 72 today, sinking two birdies with four bogeys.
Junior Tyler Kowack (San Diego/Canyon Crest Academy) is tied for 22nd at 1-over 141 following a 71 today, highlighted by an eagle on the par-5, 502-yard ninth hole. He also had four birdies, five bogeys and a double bogey.
Sophomore Dylan Oyama (Carlsbad, Calif.) is tied for 48th at 145 after shooting a 76 in Tuesday’s second round, while sophomore Nathan Sampson (Temecula, Calif.) is tied for 63rd at 148 with a 75 today.
Defending champion Filip Jakubcik of Arizona leads the way through two days at 9-under 131, one stroke ahead of UNLV’s Caden Fioroni (-8). Four others are tied for third at -6.
San Diego State will play in Wednesday’s final group with Pepperdine, Arizona and Stanford, beginning at noon PT.
