RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. – The San Diego State women’s golf team finished the Mountain West Championship at the Mission Hills Country Club Thursday. The Aztecs were led by freshman Kylie Phi who shot a nine-over-par 225, which put her in tie for 14th.
As a team, the Aztecs finished in eighth place with a 60-over-par 914.
Phi moved up 17 spots after shooting a one-under-par 71 in the final round. She had four birdies (two on each nine) to offset a trio of bogeys. She improved her score in each round (78-76-71) and became the first freshman to lead the Aztec at the conference tournament since Fernanda Escauriza in 2017.
Ema Narita tied for 18th overall with a 12-over-par 228. She finished the tournament with a 79 (+7) in her final round.
Stephanie Barbaglia finished one stroke behind Narita after shooting a six-over-par 78 in the third round. She tied for 23rd.
Maya Benita had her best round of the tournament Thursday with a four-over-par 76. Her day was highlighted by an eagle on the 482-yard par five second hole. She finished with a 232 (+16) and tied for 29th.
Emilia Omander shot a 81 in the final round and ended the tournament with a 243.
San Jose State and UNLV were tied after 54 holes and then UNLV won on the second playoff hole. San Jose State’s Lucia Lopez Ortega won the individual championship with a five-under-par 211 (69-73-69).
STAT OF THE DAY
The Aztecs averaged 3.30 strokes on par threes, tied for the third best average in the tournament. Stephanie Barbaglia tied for the fifth best score on par threes (3.08)
