BOISE, Idaho – Coming off a win on Friday night at Dona Larsen Park on the campus of Boise State, the San Diego State softball team had a chance to take the three-game series against the Broncos on Saturday. Julie Holcomb, Jazmin Williams and Jade Ignacio each laced RBI singles in the first inning before the Aztecs scored a run each in the second and third innings. The Aztecs exploded for five runs in the top of the sixth inning on a Gabriella Terrones pinch-hit grand slam and a Williams solo homer while Grace Uribe pitched a gem, allowing two runs on two hits across six innings.

For the second straight game, San Diego State’s (29-15, 13-6) Bella Espinoza led off the game with an infield single, this time off Boise State (29-17, 11-8) pitcher Olivia Bauer. Espinoza stole second and came around to score when Julie Holcomb singled through the right side. Cali Decker was hit by a pitch, putting two runners on. Jazmin Williams continued her hot hitting with a single back up the middle. Holcomb raced home and was ruled safe due to obstruction at home plate but had to be removed from the game following the collision. Jade Ignacio followed Williams with an RBI single of her own as Decker crossed the plate to put SDSU up 3-0. In the bottom of the inning, Grace Uribe worked around a leadoff bunt single to keep the Broncos off the board.

Coming off a two-homer game on Friday night, Quinn Waiki got another hit, this time with a leadoff single to left. She moved up to second base on a groundout and scored from there on a wild pitch to extend the Aztecs’ lead to 4-0. Uribe sat down the Broncos in order in the bottom of the inning including a three-pitch strikeout of Sydney Groves.

In the third inning, Decker walked and Williams singled. With two outs, Shannon worked a 12-pitch at-bat including seven foul balls, finishing it with an RBI single to right center to score Williams and make it a 5-0 game. Uribe issued a leadoff walk in the bottom half but retired the next three hitters, finishing the inning with a strikeout of Mykenzie Hanna.

Uribe had a repeat performance in the fourth, retiring the next three hitters after a leadoff walk and concluded the frame with her third strikeout of the day.

Cunningham doubled for the Aztecs in the fifth inning but could not get any further. Uribe sat down the Broncos in order in the bottom of the frame, capping it off with a strikeout for the third consecutive inning.

Waiki was hit by a pitch to begin the sixth inning. Angie Yellen singled to center before Espinoza bunted for another single to load the bases. Stacey Nuveman Deniz went to her bench to send backup catcher Gabriella Terrones to the plate. She went deep to center for a grand slam to blow the game open with a 9-0 score. Two batters later, Williams hit the first pitch she saw onto the berm in right center field for her fourth home run in her last six games. Jade Ignacio would also double in the inning before the Broncos finally got out of it. Uribe stayed in, seeking the 40th one-hitter in SDSU’s recorded history. After a flyout, she hit Hanna before striking out Makenzie Butt for the second out of the inning. Brooklyn Pettis had other plans, hitting a two-run home run to center field to get the Broncos on the board, 10-2. Uribe rebounded on the next pitch, getting Leah McAnally to fly out to left field to end the game with an Aztec victory.
