SAN DIEGO – San Diego State men’s tennis wrapped up its regular season with a win over Nevada at the Aztec Tennis Center on Saturday. The Aztecs captured the doubles point in addition to wins on courts two, three and six on their way to a 4-2 victory.
The Scarlet and Black improve to 9-12 overall and 2-4 in the Mountain West while the Wolfpack falls to 12-9 on the season and 2-4 in the league.
The Aztecs secured the doubles point with wins on courts two and three. Eugenio Gonzalez Fitzmaurice and Denis Maijorov took down Max Contet and Rayen Hermassi 6-3 on court three before Liam Spiers and Marc Kleber clinched the point with a 6-4 win over Remy Tregoures and Greg Valente in the second spot. The top court matchup between Youssef Kadiri/Lucas Hammond and Alexander Mandma/Mathieu Josserand was left unfinished with the Wolfpack leading 5-4.
Maijorov was the first to add a point in singles play, defeating Valente 6-2, 6-4 on the sixth court.
Nevada tied the match score with wins on courts one and five. Playing in the top spot, Gonzalez Fitzmaurice was bested 6-2, 6-1 by Kadiri while Kleber fell 6-3, 6-2 to Contet on the fifth court.
Alexander Mandma earned his final regular season victory on his senior day, taking court two 6-3, 6-3 over Hammond to reestablish a lead for the Aztecs. Fellow senior Mathieu Josserand then clinched the match in a third set thriller, taking down Hermassi 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 on court three.
San Diego State’s third senior, Liam Spiers, was leading in his unfinished court four matchup. After falling 5-7 in the first set, Spiers rallied to a 7-5 win in the second and held a 4-1 advantage when the match was called.
“This was a great way to wrap up the season,” said head coach Gene Carswell. “I’m happy for our seniors today, being able to go out on a winning note. All of our seniors were victorious today and nobody took a loss. To have Mathieu be the clincher, that was fantastic. Throughout the course of this year, we’ve been competitive with everyone in our conference, and we’re looking forward to continuing on an upward trend.”
Next up, the Aztecs head to Las Vegas for the Mountain West Tournament. Entering as the No. 6 seed, San Diego State will face No. 3 Utah State at 5 p.m. on Wednesday.
