SAN DIEGO – San Diego State men’s tennis is headed to Las Vegas, kicking off Mountain West Championship play in a first-round matchup against No. 3 seed Utah State on Wednesday. First serve is scheduled for 5 p.m. PT at the Darling Tennis Center.

The Aztecs enter the tournament as the No. 6 seed with a 9-12 overall record and 2-4 in the league. Last time out, the Scarlet and Black closed out its regular season with a 4-2 win over Nevada on Saturday.
The Aztecs secured the doubles point with wins on courts two and three. Eugenio Gonzalez Fitzmaurice and Denis Maijorov took down Max Contet and Rayen Hermassi 6-3 on court three before Liam Spiers and Marc Kleber clinched the point with a 6-4 win over Remy Tregoures and Greg Valente in the second spot. Maijorov was the first to add a point in singles play, defeating Valente 6-2, 6-4 on the sixth court. Alexander Mandma took court two 6-3, 6-3 over Hammond and Mathieu Josserand clinched the match in a third set thriller, taking down Hermassi 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 on court three.
Utah State brings a 14-8 overall record to Las Vegas. 4-2 in conference play, the Aggies most recently earned a 4-1 victory over Air Force on Saturday. In the last meeting between the two teams on Feb. 16, San Diego State was bested 4-0 on the road.
Last season, the Aztecs made a deep run in the tournament before falling 4-1 to second-seeded No. 57 Boise State in the championship match. The Scarlet and Black downed the No. 63-ranked Aggies, who were the No. 1 overall seed, 4-3 to advance to the championship after defeating fifth-seeded Nevada 4-1.
The winner of Wednesday’s contest will move on to face either No. 2 seed New Mexico or No. 7 seed UNLV at 5 p.m. on Thursday.
