SAN DIEGO – San Diego State men’s tennis wrapped up the 2025 campaign on Wednesday, coming up short to third-seeded Utah State in the first round of the Mountain West Championship. The Aztecs came out strong, taking the doubles point with two commanding victories, but couldn’t overcome the Aggies in singles competition in a 4-1 defeat.
Liam Spiers and Marc Kleber put the Scarlet and Black at an early advantage, cruising to a 6-2 win over Mohammad Alkotop and Dmitri Goubin on court two. Eugenio Gonzalez Fitzmaurice and Denis Maijorov then clinched the point, taking down Sergi Mico Fenollar and Keanu Rigby 6-4 on the third court. All-Mountain West Doubles selection Alexander Mandma and Mathieu Josserand’s top court matchup against David Martirosian and Eliot Nobel was left unfinished, tied 5-5.
The Aggies rallied from behind in singles play, taking courts one, two, four and five.
Playing in the second spot, Mandma fell 6-0, 6-2 to Alkotop.
Maijorov was then bested 6-3, 6-0 by Nobel on court five.
On the fourth court, Spiers was tripped up 6-3, 6-4 by Roman Venger.
Mico Fenollar clinched the match for the Aggies at the top of the lineup. All-Mountain West Singles selection Gonzalez Fitzmaurice fell 6-4, 6-3 to the senior.
Two matches were left unfinished. Josserand was on the verge of a victory on court three, leading David Martirosian 6-4, 5-4, while Kleber took the first set 6-3 over Goubin on the bottom court before dropping the second set 6-2.
The Aztecs finish the season with a 9-13 overall record.
