COALVILLE, Utah -- The 25th-ranked San Diego State men’s golf team fired a 10-under-par 274 in Tuesday’s final round to move up four places and finish in a tie for seventh at The Wohali in Coalville, Utah. The Aztecs tied with UNLV for seventh out of 14 teams at 19-over 871 on the par-71, 7,873-yard Eagle Course at The Wohali Club.

SDSU’s 10-under 274 was even more impressive considering it was playing without its No. 1 golfer Harry Takis (Brisbane, Australia) because of a minor injury and San Diego State’s other four starters all counted in its team scoring in the five-count-four event. The Aztecs, who are ranked 25th in the preseason Bushnell/Golfweek DI Coaches Poll, tied host Utah for the third-lowest round of the day at -10.

No. 6 Arizona State and New Mexico were co-champions at -14, while the Utes were a shot back at -13 on their home course. No. 13 Brigham Young (-5), Kansas State (+13) and Colorado State (+16) also beat SDSU. Behind San Diego State was San Diego (ninth, +23), No. 24 UCLA (10th, +30) and Oregon State (14th, +47), among others.

All four Aztecs competing today - junior Nathan Sampson (Temecula, Calif.), senior Chanachon Chokprajakchat (Bangkok, Thailand), sophomore Kai Hirayama (Arcadia, Calif.) and senior Tyler Kowack (San Diego/Canyon Crest Academy) - had their best round of the tournament (or matched it). Sampson and Chokprajakchat each had matching 5-under 66s, while Kowack carded a 1-under 70 and Hirayama had his second 1-over 72 of the tournament.

Sampson tied for 14th overall at even-par 213. Sampson matched a collegiate career-low with his 66 today, highlighted by six birdies and one bogey. He played his final 13 holes at 5-under.

Chokprajakchat, meanwhile, had his second round of the week in the 60s after opening with a 69 and following with a disappointing 82. Chokprajakchat was one shot off matching a collegiate career-low 18-hole round thanks to five birdies and no bogeys. He finished in a tie for 24th at +4.

Hirayama tied for 27th at 5-over 218 with a 72 today, sinking two birdies with three bogeys. Kowack tied for 44th thanks to a 1-under 70 on Tuesday, making three birdies with two bogeys.

Utah’s Davis Johnson and Arizona State’s Connor Williams shared medalist honors at -9, two shots ahead of Utah’s Gabriel Palacios (-7) and New Mexico’s Mesa Falleur (-7).

The Aztecs also had five golfers competing as individuals at the Soldier Hollow Individual at Soldier Hollow Golf Course in Midway, Utah, including freshmen Beah Sahr (Eagle, Idaho), junior Phillip Kench (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines HS), sophomore Teddy Gardner (San Francisco), sophomore Grant Lester (Washington D.C.) and freshman Grayson Sebastian (Richmond, Texas). Scores, however, were not posted as of 4:15 p.m. PT.

SDSU wraps up its fall competition at the Marquette Intercollegiate, March 5-7, in Erin, Wisconsin.
