SAN DIEGO – San Diego State’s Denis Maijorov and William Kleege’s deep run in the doubles bracket at the 68th Annual Men’s Intercollegiate Championships came to an end on Saturday with the Aztecs falling in the semifinal round.
The duo collected three victories over the weekend, first making it through qualifiers with a 6-4 win over Northwestern’s Cooper Han and Ethan Schiffman. In the round of 16, Maijorov and Kleege took down Cyrus Ahmad and Alexander Nothdurft of Loyola Marymount in a 6-4 victory to move on to Saturday’s quarterfinals.
The Aztecs faced Grand Canyon’s Andreas Loizas and Tristan Berard on Saturday, posting their third 6-4 victory to advance to the semifinals. Maijorov and Kleege then battled against San Diego’s Adrien Berrut and Lambert Ruland in a tight matchup, but ultimately came up short 7-5 to the Toreros.
Next up, San Diego State men’s tennis will head to Tempe, Ariz. for the ITA Southwest Regional Championships, beginning Oct. 16.
