SAN DIEGO – Denis Maijorov and William Kleege of San Diego State men’s tennis are moving on at the 68th Annual Men’s Intercollegiate Championships after posting a win in doubles and one in singles. They will return to action at the Hogan Tennis Center on Friday morning.
In the doubles qualifying round, the two Aztecs faced Cooper Han and Ethan Schiffman of Northwestern University, defeating the Wildcats 6-4 to earn their spot in the main draw. Next up, the duo will play Loyola Marymount’s Cyrus Ahmad and Alexander Nothdurft.
In just his second collegiate tournament, Kleege, a freshman out of Torrey Pines High School, earned a 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) victory over BYU’s Adam Chodur to advance out of the round of 32. He will go up against Washington’s Brett Pearson in Friday’s round of 16 matchup.
Maijorov battled in three sets against Valentin Faure of Santa Clara, but came up short in the 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) result.
Day two is set to get underway at 9 a.m. PT, beginning with doubles competition.
