Aztec Swim and Dive Wins Seven Events on Day One at CBU Double Dual
The San Diego State swim and dive program enjoyed a strong start to their weekend double dual meet against California Baptist and UC Santa Barbara after winning seven events on Friday at Lancer Aquatics Center in Riverside, California.
RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The San Diego State swim and dive team enjoyed a strong start to its weekend double dual meet at California Baptist on Friday at Lancer Aquatics Center.
Competing against host CBU and UC Santa Barbara, the Aztecs claimed six swimming titles in nine scheduled events to go with one diving crown on the 3-meter springboard, although team scores were unavailable at press time.
SDSU was firing on all cylinders at the outset, as the 400 medley relay team of Abby Storm, Moa Bergdahl, Alli Mann and Alyssa Schiller combined for a winning time of 3:35.95, which ranks eighth on the school’s all-time list.
Mann was also victorious in a pair of individual races, emerging triumphant in the 50 butterfly with a sprint of 24.57, before sharing a crown later in the meet in the 50 freestyle, where she touched the wall simultaneously with Schiller at 22.87.
In addition, the Aztecs received a trio of NCAA “B” cut times from Storm, Bergdahl and Reka Nyiradi in their respective events. Storm topped the field in the 100 backstroke with a clocking of 52.95, while Bergdahl captured the proverbial gold in the 100 breaststroke after recording a swim of 1:00.51.
Not to be outdone, Nyiradi finished second in the 200 butterfly, where she logged a career-fast time of 1:57.95, which ranks second in program history. Earlier, the SDSU junior won the 200 freestyle after completing the race at 1:47.81, just 0.05 seconds shy of a personal best.
Rounding out Friday’s swimming action was the Aztecs’ 200 freestyle relay team of Schiller, Camille Seiley, Mann and Bispo, who placed second with a time of 1:33.76.
Other highlights for the Scarlet and Black featured a second-place finish from Liv Peebles in the 100 back (54.68) and third-place efforts by Bispo in the 200 free (1:50.58) and Alex Downing in the 50 fly (25.27).
Two SDSU “B” relays additionally registered third-place performances on Friday. The foursome of Peebles, Roni Black, Sierra Tallman and Bispo clocked in at 3:41.61 in the 400 medley relay, while the quartet of Tallman, Bergdahl, Melanie Quinto and Storm completed the 200 free relay at 1:33.87.
Elsewhere, Isabella Gomez was deemed the winner in 3-meter diving competition with an unofficial NCAA zone qualifying score, while Alina Skrocki took third.
San Diego State wraps the CBU double dual meet on Saturday, starting at 11 a.m. PT. The Aztecs will compete in 11 events, including the 200 medley relay, 500 freestyle, 50 breaststroke, 100 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 200 breaststroke, 100 butterfly, 50 backstroke, 200 individual medley, 400 freestyle relay, as well as 1-meter diving.
