WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. -- Led by a 3-under-par 67 by sophomore Harry Takis (Brisbane, Australia), the San Diego State men’s golf team is tied for third after the first round of the Southwestern Invitational Monday in Westlake Village, California.
The Aztecs, who entered 29th in the latest Scoreboard powered by Clippd computer rankings, finished at 1-under-par 281 on the par-70, 6,764-yard North Ranch Country Club, tied with No. 47 SMU in third. Host and No. 15 Pepperdine sits atop the team standings at 7-under 273, while UNLV is also under par at 2-under. Rounding out the top 10 in the 13-team field are No. 19 Utah (+4), San Diego (+6), No. 24 USC (+8), San Jose State (+10), No. 17 New Mexico (+12) and No. 41 Washington (+12).
Takis fired a 3-under 67, sinking six birdies with three bogeys on the day. Takis is tied with Pepperdine’s Luke Dariotis and Utah’s Sergio Jimenez in second at -3, two shots behind the solo leader Trevor Lewis (UNLV) (-5).
Sophomore Kai Hirayama (Arcadia, Calif.) and redshirt junior Dylan Oyama (Carlsbad, Calif./Pacific Ridge HS) each shot 1-over 71s and are tied for 22nd in the 75-man field. Hirayama was at 5-over 39 for his front nine, but shot a 32 on the back nine, highlighted by an eagle on the par-5, 485-yard 15th hole, and two birdies.
Competing in his first event of the 2025-26 campaign, Oyama was 3-over through 14 holes, but went bogey free the rest of the way with birdies on 15th hole and the par-4, 431-yard 18th.
Senior Chanachon Chokprajakchat (Bangkok, Thailand) rounded out the team scoring with a 2-over 72, good enough for 30th. Chokprajakchat was +4 over his first 11 holes but went bogey free the rest of the round with birdies on the par-5, 532-yard 12th and No. 15.
Competing as an individual, freshman Beau Sahr (Eagle, Idaho) is 42nd at +4. Starting on the 10th hole, Sahr was 3-under through his first four holes but was 7-over the final 14 holes.
Senior Tyler Kowack (San Diego/Canyon Crest Academy) is 51st at +5. Kowack’s rollercoaster of a round featured an eagle on the 15th, three birdies, six pars, six bogeys and two double bogeys.
The second round gets underway for the Aztecs at 9:25 a.m. PT Tuesday on the 10th hole.
