COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- San Diego State’s Harry Takis (Brisbane, Australia) has been named the Mountain West Men’s Golfer of the Week, the league announced Thursday. It is first career golfer of the week award for Takis, who was a three-time MW Freshman of the Week last year.
Takis captured his first career collegiate title at the Southwestern Invitational, which wrapped up on Wednesday. Leading by a stroke heading into yesterday’s final round, Takis shot an even-par 70 on the 6,764-yard North Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village, California, to finish at 7-under 203. It was the first career victory for the 2025 Mountain West Freshman of the Year after three runner-up finishes over his last six collegiate tournaments, dating back to last season.
It was the second straight tournament that an Aztec has earned medalist honors after senior Tyler Kowack (San Diego/Canyon Crest Academy) won the Marquette Intercollegiate in SDSU’s last event of the fall from Oct. 5-7 at Erin Hills Golf Club in Erin Hills, Wisconsin.
Takis opened with a 3-under 67 on Monday before taking the tournament lead with a 66 in Tuesday’s second round. Takis, who competed in only one event for San Diego State in the fall, a T2 at the Sahalee Players Championship, Sept. 6-7, had a three-shot lead with four holes to play in yesterday’s final round, but had consecutive bogeys on the par-5, 485-yard 15th and the par-4, 401-yard 16th holes. After a par on the par-3, 186-yard 17th, Takis led by a single stroke over Pepperdine’s Brady Siravo with only the par-4, 431-yard 18th left to play. Takis hit his approach shot to about a foot and sank the putt to finish with a two-stroke victory as Siravo settled for a par.
The Takis birdie also helped the Aztecs, who entered 29th in the latest Scoreboard powered by Clippd computer rankings, finish in solo second out of 13 teams at 6-over 846, one place ahead of UNLV (+7). Host and No. 15 Pepperdine won the event at -11. Rounding out the top 10 behind SDSU was No. 41 Washington (+16), No. 24 USC (+18), San Diego (+18), No. 17 New Mexico (+30), No. 19 Utah (+36), No. 21 UCLA (+36) and No. 47 SMU (+37).
Takis leads the Aztecs with a 69.5 scoring average across six rounds this season.
SDSU next competes in the John A. Burns Intercollegiate at the Ocean Course Hokuala, Feb. 12-14, in Lihue, Hawaii.
