SAN DIEGO – The San Diego State softball team is back home this weekend to play six games as part of the Campbell/Cartier Classic tournament.
The Aztecs are welcoming Baylor, North Dakota, Fordham and Oregon to town for the tournament, which runs from Thursday-Sunday. San Diego State opens against the Bears at 6 p.m. Thursday, plays twice on Friday, facing Baylor again at 4:30 p.m. and Fordham at 7 p.m. SDSU plays twice more on Saturday, against North Dakota at 2 p.m. and Oregon State at 7 p.m. SDSU will have a rematch with the Beavers at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday. SDSU’s games on Thursday and Saturday will be streamed on the Mountain West Network.
The Aztecs have previously played all four teams. SDSU is 2-5 when facing Baylor. The Aztecs won two of the first three meetings, winning 3-1 in 2000 and 2-1 in 2002 but the Bears responded by taking the next four games between 2008 and 2015, the last time the teams matched up. San Diego State is a perfect 2-0 against North Dakota, winning 13-7 during the 2014 Shocker Softball Classic in Wichita, Kansas, and by a 2-1 score in the 2024 Louisville Slugger Invitational in Fullerton, Calif. SDSU has also won all its meetings with Fordham. The Aztecs won 7-1 in 2007, 3-1 in 2010 and 5-4 during the 2014 season. SDSU holds a 16-9 advantage in the all-time series with Oregon State. The teams haven’t played since a pair of Aztec wins in two 2015 matchups. San Diego State was 5-1 in the six contests between 2010 and 2015.
Last week, SDSU went 3-1 in the SDSU Season Kickoff with walk-off wins over Minnesota, Loyola Chicago (run-rule) and Kentucky. Catcher Jade Ignacio was named the Mountain West Player of the Week after hitting .636 with a 1.727 OPS on seven hits including a home run and two doubles.
Other top performers for SDSU include Jazmin Williams (.583, 1.448 OPS, 4 R, 1 HR), Julie Holcomb (.417, .917 OPS, 2 SB) and Olivia Gigante (.300, 1.162 OPS, 1 HR, 4 RBI). In the circle, Faith Jordan (8.2 IP, 0.81 ERA, 6 K, 0 BB) and returner Ava Schaffel (4 IP, 1.75 ERA, 2 K) have led the pitching staff.
