LIHUE, Hawaii -- Sophomore Harry Takis (Brisbane, Australia) carded a 2-under-par 68 to lead the San Diego State men’s golf team on a windy opening round of the John A. Burns Intercollegiate Thursday in Lihue, Hawai’i. Takis was the only golfer with a bogey-free round in the 111-man field on the par-70, 7,098-yard Ocean Course at Hokuala and is tied for sixth overall.

Takis, who has a victory and three runner-up finishes over his last seven collegiate tournaments dating back to last spring, started his round with consecutive birdies on the par-4, 367-yard 12th and the par-4, 474-yard 13th holes, before registering pars on his final 16 holes.

Takis only trails Utah’s Sergio Jimenez (-4), Texas A&M’s Aaron Pounds (-3) and Braden Smith (-3), Hawai’i's James Whitworth (-3) and LMU’s Trevor Algya (-3).

Kai Hirayama (Arcadia, Calif.), meanwhile, who started at the back-nine and was 1-over at the turn, followed with back-to-back birdies on the par-4, 438-yard first and par-5, 525-yard second. He then parred out to sign for a 69, his lowest score of the season, which is tied for 14th.

Senior Tyler Kowack (San Diego/Canyon Crest Academy) is tied for 46th at +2. Starting on the par-4, 443-yard 11th hole, Kowack was 5-over through his first 14 holes today but rallied with birdies in three of his final four holes to sign for the 72.

Junior Dylan Oyama (Carlsbad, Calif./Pacific Ridge HS) is a shot behind Kowack in a tie for 58th at 3-over. The highlight for Oyama was an eagle 2 on the par-4, 331-yard 16th. He also had two birdies, five bogeys and a double bogey.

Senior Chanachon Chokprajakchat (Bangkok, Thailand) rounded out SDSU’s starting lineup with a 74, which is tied for 69th through one round. His lone birdie came on the 12th hole. Chokprajakchat also had five bogeys on the day.

Competing as an individual, junior Nathan Sampson (Temecula, Calif.) shot a 76 and is tied for 89th at +6. Sampson had four birdies, but also six bogeys and two double bogeys.

As a team, the Aztecs, who were 22nd in the latest computer rankings released on Wednesday, are tied for eighth with Santa Clara out of 19 teams at 2-over 282, just one shot back of No. 19 New Mexico (+1), No. 30 Brigham Young (+1), No. 38 UNLV (+1) and UTEP (+1). LMU leads the field after a day at -4, while No. 32 Texas A&M (-3) and No. 42 Long Beach State (-2) are also under par.
