Mbye and Young Leads Aztecs at Opening Day of the Battle Born Classic

Xiamara Young secured her third first place finish of the season while Aji Mbye posted the fifth fastest all-time 60-meter dash.

RENO, NEV. –San Diego State Track and Field returned to the Reno-Sparks Convention Center for the second consecutive week for the Battle Born Classic. The first day of action saw the Aztecs compete across multiple events including another first-place finish in the long jump and a record setting performance in the 60-meter dash.

San Diego State’s pole vaulters were the first Aztecs to compete on the day. Coming off a strong team showing last weekend, the pole vault team continued their momentum. Isabella Nilsen secured a second-place finish and eclipsed the 4.00m mark for the second straight meet. Peyton Bedrosian was not far behind, claiming third place with a 3.94m vault. Sydney Ash, Emily Manship and Jordan Leveque all finished in the top six thanks to solid 3.79m marks.

The distance team also returned to the track for the first time since January 31. Four Aztecs competed in the mile and all finished in the top 10 for the day. Isabella Fauria paced her teammates with a second-place finish and 5:04.98 final time. Sara Jones and Elliana Lomeli were not far behind, taking third and fourth place running 5:05.50 and 5:05.84 respectively.

Brinley Campbell advanced through both the preliminary and semifinal rounds of the 60-meter hurdles before posting a new personal best of 8.56 in the finals.

In the 60-meter dash both Aji Mbye and Mikaela Warr reached the finals. Warr was steady in each of her three appearances running including a 7.45 performance in the semifinals. Mbye was outstanding in the preliminary rounds, taking second place and running 7.39. She was even more dominant in the semifinals, booking her ticket to the final race thanks to a personal best 7.32 final time that now stands as the fifth fastest 60-meter dash in program history. Olivia Hicks, Taylor Anyansi and Kelia Bentham were all able to reach the semifinals as well. Anyansi set a personal best of 7.58 while Bentham made her SDSU debut in the 60-meters with a 7.59 performance.

Xiamara Young has continued her dominant start to the season securing her third first place finish of the season. The Aztec’s All-American jumper secured the top spot on the podium thanks to a 6.26m jump. She was one of two athletes to eclipse the 6.00m mark. Giselle Galles and Chloe Williams rounded out San Diego State’s long jump performers.

Lastly, Jada Pierre had a successful showing across multiple events despite competing unattached. Pierre won the 60-meter hurdles while also qualifying for the finals in the 60-meter dash.

The action will resume tomorrow at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center at 10:00 a.m. PT. San Diego State will compete in five different events including the 4x400 meter relay.
