SAN DIEGO – San Diego State lacrosse is gearing up to round out its three-game home stand on Monday, hosting Oregon at Aztec Field on Monday in a noon contest. Follow along on the live stream or live stats.
The Aztecs improved to a 1-1 record on Thursday following a 15-5 win over FDU. The Ducks enter the matchup 2-0 on the season after capturing a 12-11 overtime victory over Arizona State in their season opener, followed by a 16-5 win against FDU on Saturday.
The two programs have faced each other twelve times, and the Aztecs currently lead the all-time series 8-4. Last season, the Scarlet and Black dropped a 17-16 heartbreaker on the road, snapping a five-game winning streak.
In Thursday’s win, San Diego State was led by freshmen Lilah Turley and Barrett Doan with a career high three goals apiece. Keira Doyle-Odenbach, Mia Maechtel and Megan McDevitt found the back of the net two times each while Macie Buell, Sophia Miller and Tatum Neach added one apiece. Of the 15 goals scored by the Aztecs, nine of them were assisted.
The Aztec defense held the Knights to five goals, and just one in the first half. They also forced 15 total turnovers, led by Maya Tillman with three. San Diego State currently leads the Big 12 in caused turnovers per game with 12.50. It also leads the league in ground balls per game, averaging 21.50.
All three Aztec goalies got playing time on Thursday. Starting keeper Caitlin Boughton played 43 minutes in the cage, recording five saves. Grace Moore played for 11 minutes and grabbed two saves. Karli Weisser also made it on the field, spending five minutes between the pipes.
Maechtel leads the Aztec offense with five goals through the first two games, followed by Doyle-Odenbach and Turley with four each. Freshmen Turley and Millie Prager have picked up the most ground balls, each grabbing six, which ranks them second in the Big 12 in ground balls per game. Tillman has forced four turnovers, which leads San Diego State and ranks third in the league.
Following Monday’s game, the Aztecs will be back in action on Feb. 28 to take on East Carolina in the team’s first road game.
