SAN DIEGO – San Diego State women’s tennis captured its fifth win of the season on Sunday, taking down Hawai’i in a 4-0 sweep at the Aztec Tennis Center. The Aztecs took the doubles point, as well as wins on courts three, four and five on their way to their fourth shutout victory.
San Diego State improves to 5-1 while Hawai’i falls to 3-4.
No. 32 Jo-Yee Chan and Vessa Turley had the first win of the day, posting a dominant 6-0 victory against Grete Gull and Sophie Rachor on court one. Jayna Clemens and Ninon Martinache then clinched the point with a 6-1 win over Makeilah Nepomuceno and Hannah Galindo in the second spot. Gloria Alogo and Liisa Varul were ahead 5-1 in their third court matchup against Emma Forgac and Allaire Berl.
In singles competition, Teja Tirunelveli added the first point, taking down Galindo 6-2, 6-1 on court five. Clemens then took court four by a score of 6-1, 6-1 over Rachor in the fourth spot. Alogo clinched the match for the Aztecs, earning a 6-1, 6-3 win over Forgac on the third court.
All three remaining Aztecs led on their respective courts when the match was clinched. No. 107 Chan had a 7-6 (7-2), 2-4 advantage against Gull on court one, while Martinache was ahead 6-2, 4-3 over Nepomuceno and Varul led 6-2, 5-3 against Berl.
Next up, the team will take on Sacramento State on Feb. 22 at the Aztec Tennis Center, beginning at 11 a.m.
