Chanachon Chokprajakchat in Second Through Two Rounds at the R.E. Lamkin Invitational

Aztecs in third out of 16 teams at San Diego Country Club.

CHULA VISTA, Calif. -- Senior Chanachon Chokprajakchat (Bangkok, Thailand) is in second place through two rounds of the R.E. Lamkin Invitational to lead the San Diego State men’s golf team Monday at San Diego Country Club.

Chokprajakchat is at 7-under-par 137 after 36 holes on the par-72, 7,033-yard course, four shots behind Long Beach State’s Alejando De Castro (-11). Chokprajakchat has just one bogey through 36 holes, the fewest in the 96-man tournament. He opened with a 3-under 69 in the morning and then fired a 4-under 68 in the windy afternoon round. Chokprajakchat’s eight birdies for the tournament have come on eight different holes.

Brigham Young’s Kihei Akina is third at -6, while San Diego’s Cooper Humphreys and Reed Arnaldo, and UC Irvine’s Junting Yu are tied for fourth at -5.

The Aztecs, who are 28th in the latest Scoreboard powered by clippd computer rankings, are third out of 16 teams at 11-under 565 after rounds of 9-under 279 and 2-under 286. Host San Diego leads at -19, while No. 38 Long Beach State is two shots ahead of SDSU in second at -13. Saint Mary’s (-8), No. 30 Brigham Young (-7), No. 47 Colorado (-7) and UC San Diego (-1) are the only other teams under par.

Sophomore Kai Hirayama (Arcadia, Calif.), meanwhile, is in a tie for 11th at 3-under 141. Hirayama opened with a 3-under 69 with four birdies and a bogey in the first round and then shot an even-par 72 with three birdies and three bogeys.  

Sophomore Harry Takis (Brisbane, Australia), the top-ranked player in the country in the Scoreboard powered by clippd computer rankings and member of the Haskins Award Spring Watch List for the nation’s best player, is tied for 23rd with freshman Beau Sahr (Eagle, Idaho) and seven others at even-par 144. Takis had back-to-back 72s, making four birdies against four bogeys in each round.

Competing for the first time in the starting lineup, Sahr went 70-74 on the day. In his opening 70, Sahr had five birdies and three bogeys. In the afternoon for his 74, Sahr was at 4-over through 12 holes after making five consecutive bogeys but rallied with three birdies over his next four holes, before signing for a 2-over-par second round.

Senior Tyler Kowack (San Diego/Canyon Crest Academy) is tied for 40th at +2. Kowack shot a 1-under 71 in the opening round with four birdies and three bogeys. He then shot a 3-over 75 with his lone birdies coming on the par-4, 368-yard first hole, his last hole of the day.

San Diego State also had five others competing as individuals. Junior Dylan Oyama (Carlsbad, Calif./Pacific Ridge HS) is tied for 45th at +3, sophomore Teddy Gardner (San Francisco, Calif.) is tied for 53rd at +4, junior Phillip Kench (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines HS/UNLV) is 79th and freshman Grayson Sebastian (Richmond, Texas) is 95th at +16, Junior Nathan Sampson (Temecula, Calif.) was disqualified after shooting a 2-under 70, but signing an incorrect scorecard in the second round.

The Aztecs tee off in Tuesday’s final round from the first hole at 8:50 a.m. PT with San Diego, Long Beach State and Saint Mary’s.
