SAN DIEGO – No. 42 San Diego State women’s tennis bounced back after yesterday’s loss against No. 32 SMU with their fourth conference win, shutting out New Mexico 4-0 at the Aztec Tennis Center on Friday. The Aztecs improve to 12-3 overall and 4-1 in the Mountain West while the Lobos fall to 11-7 on the season and 2-3 in the league.
The doubles point went to the Scarlet and Black after capturing wins on the top and bottom courts. No. 50 Jo-Yee Chan and Vessa Turley downed Sarah L’Allier and Coumba Ben Niangadou 6-1 on court one before Gloria Alogo and Liisa Varul secured the point with a 6-2 victory over Yu Yun Tsai and Bente Vandeputte on the third court. Jayna Clemens and Ninon Martinache were trailing 5-3 against Vianca and Vivica Corley in the second spot when the point was earned.
Clemens was the first to put a point on the board in singles competition, taking down Ana Veroux 6-0, 6-1 on court three. Vesa Gjinaj then extended San Diego State’s lead with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Marika Matsoukatidi in the fifth spot. Chan was the clincher, completing the sweep after defeating Vandeputte 6-3, 6-4 on the top court.
Martinache led Vianca Corley 6-4, 2-4 in the second spot, Vessa Turley was ahead 0-6, 6-2, 1-0 against Lea Malazdra on court six and Teja Tirunelveli trailed Tsai 6-4, 4-2 on court four when the match was called.
