STANFORD, Calif. -- The San Diego State men’s golf team is in 13th-place out of 30 teams through two rounds of The Goodwin. The Aztecs shot a 4-over-par 284 on the par-70, 6,742-yard Stanford Golf Course on Friday and are at 4-over 564 for the tournament heading into Saturday’s final round.
SDSU, which is 33rd in the latest Scoreboard powered by clipped computer rankings, are just ahead of No. 36 TCU (+5) and Nevada (+5), and three strokes behind a three-way tie for seventh at even par, including No. 41 Northwestern, No. 44 Colorado and California. SMU (10th, +1), Oregon (11th, +2) and No. 30 Utah (+3) are just ahead of San Diego State. No. 24 Brigham Young and No. 35 UCLA are tied for the team lead at -12, while host and No. 23 Stanford and No. 31 Long Beach State are tied for third at -11 with No. 21 New Mexico in fifth at -10.
Sophomore Harry Takis (Brisbane, Australia), the No. 4-ranked player in the latest computer ratings, shot a 3-over 73 today and is tied for 13th at -3. After carding a 6-under 64 in Thursday’s opening round, Takis double-bogeyed his second hole, the par-4, 360-yard 11th hole. He had three birdies and four bogeys the rest of the way to sign for a 73.
Freshman Beau Sahr (Eagle, Idaho) and senior Chanachon Chokprajakchat (Bangkok, Thailand) had matching even-par 70s for the best scores of the day for the Aztecs. Sahr is now tied for 39th at +1, making four birdies and four bogeys on Friday. Chokprajakchat, meanwhile, had two birdies and two bogeys today, and is tied for 83rd at +5.
Sophomore Kai Hirayama (Arcadia, Calif.) is in a tie for 107th at +7 following a 71 today, which came with six birdies and seven bogeys.
After opening with an even-par 70 in Thursday’s first round, junior Nathan Sampson (Temecula, Calif.) shot a 78 today with one birdie, one bogey and four double bogeys. Sampson is in a tie for 119th at +8 through 36 holes.
Long Beach State’s Alejando De Castro shot a 6-under 64 to vault into the lead in the 160-player field at -9, one shot clear of Brigham Young’s Kihei Akina (-8) and New Mexico’s Mesa Falleur (-8).
San Diego State tees off with TCU and Nevada from the 10th hole for Saturday’s final round at 8:05 a.m. PT.
