SAN DIEGO – No. 42 San Diego State women’s tennis earned its fifth conference win on Sunday, taking down Air Force 4-1 at the Aztec Tennis Center to complete a three match home stand. The Aztecs improve to 13-3 overall and 5-1 in the Mountain West while the Falcons fall to 4-11 on the season and 4-2 in the league.
The Aztecs got off to a hot start, capturing the doubles point with victories on the top two courts. No. 50 Jo-Yee Chan and Vessa Turley first defeated No. 81 Sofia Mavor and Abby Cotuna 6-2 on court one before Jayna Clemens and Ninon Martinache secured the point with a 6-3 win against Arianna Van Houweling and Shivaani Selvan on court two. Gloria Alogo and Liisa Varul trailed Maya Michalaski and Jariahlyn Rhoades 5-4 in the third spot when the point was earned.
In singles competition, Turley downed Rhoades 6-2, 6-2 on the sixth court to notch the team’s second point. Vesa Gjinaj then extended the lead for San Diego State with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Mavor on court four.
The Falcons got on the board after taking the fifth court, where Varul was bested 6-2, 6-3 by Nadia Kojonroj.
Clemens clinched the match on court three, taking down Yule Kang 6-1, 6-4.
Chan and Cotuna were all tied up at one set apiece (4-6, 6-2, 0-0) on court one and Alogo led Van Houweling 6-3, 3-4 in the second spot when the match was called.
Next up, the Aztecs will head to Nevada to take on UNLV on Thursday and Nevada on Saturday.
