SAN DIEGO – San Diego State lacrosse welcomed Arizona State to Aztec Field for the final home game of the 2026 campaign on Saturday. The Aztecs battled on both ends of the field, but were unable to hold off the Sun Devils after a late scoring surge in an ultimate 15-8 defeat.
The Aztecs fall to 2-12 overall and 0-4 in the Big 12. The Sun Devils improve to 8-8 on the season and 3-1 in the league.
San Diego State’s offense was led by Mia Maechtel and Molly Jacobson with two goals apiece. Maechtel also added one assist and two ground balls.
Four other Aztecs found scoring opportunities, with Lilah Turley, Tatum Neach, Sophia Miller and Keira Doyle-Odenbach each putting one away.
The Aztecs put up an impressive showing in the draw circle, grabbing 11 while holding the Sun Devils, who rank second in the nation in draw controls per game (17.53), to 14. Tate Stokesberry led the team with four total.
San Diego State won the ground ball battle, picking up 13 while Arizona State claimed eight. Doyle-Odenbach was a key factor in the midfield, grabbing four ground balls.
The defense forced seven turnovers, led by Maya Tillman and Doyle-Odenbach with two each.
Caitlin Boughton played all 60 minutes in the cage, recording 11 saves off 30 shots faced.
Arizona State’s offense was fueled by Lydia Oldknow with five goals and two assists. Tegan Ng added three, while Jordyn Behar put two in the net in addition to four assists and Anna Viglione, Addie Shevitz, Ava Whitt, Addy Westerberg and Alyssa Nichols each had one goal apiece.
Regan Spichiger also recorded 60 minutes between the pipes, tallying 10 saves off 28 shots faced.
The Sun Devils got off to an early lead, going up 6-0 before Miller got the Aztecs on the board at the 4:14 mark in the first quarter. Behar then put away two to give Arizona State an 8-1 advantage at the start of the second period. The Aztecs responded with a run of their own, scoring five unanswered goals to pull within two with 12 minutes to go in the third. After the two teams exchanged a few goals over the following 13 minutes, the Sun Devils had a late scoring surge with four goals in the final 10 minutes to claim an ultimate 15-8 victory.
“I’m so proud of the midfield unit and how they handled the draw,” said Head Coach Kylee White. “This team is resilient and adaptable. After falling behind early in the game, we talked about why we’re playing and who we’re playing for. They knew they could be a little tougher, run a little faster, and they just bought into it. And they chipped away, which was incredible to watch. I’m very proud of them.”
Next up, the team will play its final Big 12 game of the season, heading to Cincinnati for a 1 p.m. contest on Friday.
