2026 SEASON (As a Senior): Finished his Aztec career in style, earning third-team All-America honors from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association… Also received second-team all-Mountain West recognition… Enjoyed a superlative season as SDSU’s bullpen anchor, posting a 6-2 record with a 2.53 ERA and six saves in 21 appearances as a reliever… Registered 49 strikeouts against 15 walks, compiling a stellar 0.77 WHIP to help the Scarlet and Black clinch the Mountain West regular-season championship… Topped the conference with six saves and shared the team lead with six victories, which was tied for third in the league… Burst onto the national scene early in the season when he made arguably his biggest career save, preserving the Aztecs’ 4-3 victory at then-No. 1 UCLA after retiring all 11 batters he faced (2-24-26)… Garnered the first of two straight Mountain West Pitcher of the Week accolades for his efforts against the Bruins and was named to the watch list for College Baseball Foundation’s National Pitcher of the Year award… Also merited MW Pitcher of the Week plaudits after notching the win in SDSU’s 3-2 nail-biter over Saint Mary’s (3-6-26)… Pitched the final 4.1 innings against the Gaels, tying his career high with six strikeouts while allowing just one hit in 17 batters faced… Also pocketed the victory in the Aztecs’ 12-11 thriller at Grand Canyon when he tossed a season-long five innings, yielding two runs on three hits and walk (3-28-26)… Was one of five hurlers who combined on SDSU’s 10th no-hitter in program history when the Scarlet and Black posted a 1-0 shutout of UC Riverside (4-7-26)… Earned the save against the Highlanders after freezing two batters in the ninth inning… Also closed out SDSU’s home finale against San José State, helping the Scarlet and Black clinch the Mountain West regular-season championship after pitching four scoreless innings (5-10-26)... Was credited with saves in each of his appearances against New Mexico (5-22-26) and Washington State (5-24-26) at the Mountain West tournament… Fanned four batters apiece against the Lobos (4.0 IP) and Cougars (3.1 IP)… Was named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team for third straight year and received Mountain West all-academic distinction for the second time in his career.
2025 SEASON (As a Junior): Pitched in 15 games with four starts after missing the first six weeks of his junior campaign recovering from an injury… Posted a 2-1 record with a 5.40 ERA, striking out 24 batters against 17 walks in 30 innings of work… Earned a start in his first appearance of the year, tossing one scoreless inning at UC Riverside (3-25-25)… Saw action in a setup role four days later in the Aztecs’ 5-3 home win over UNLV, offsetting a base hit with two strikeouts in another scoreless frame (3-29-25)… Was a late addition to the starting lineup in SDSU’s 9-3 triumph at San José State, where he earned his second collegiate victory and first of the season after allowing two runs on three hits and four walks with four strikeouts in a career-long six-plus innings (4-18-25)… Struck out a season-high five hitters in his second straight start at UNLV, where he gave up three unearned runs on three hits and a trio of walks but did not factor in the decision, as the Rebels rallied for an 8-5 win (4-25-25)… Retired 12 straight batters in that UNLV clash from the second through the fifth inning before issuing a walk to lead off the sixth… Came through with a clutch performance in a relief effort at Nevada, where he notched his second victory of the year after pitching 2.1 scoreless innings with three strikeouts, as the Scarlet and Black rallied for a key 7-4 triumph against the eventual MW regular-season champion Wolf Pack (5-9-25)… Saw action in two games as a reliever in SDSU’s final home series against Washington State, as the Aztecs completed a weekend sweep to clinch a spot in the Mountain West Championship (5-16/17/25)… Fanned three batters in two innings against Nevada at the conference tournament in his final appearance of the year… Received MW scholar-athlete recognition for the third straight season and earned a spot on the College Sports Communicators (CSC) academic all-district team for the second year in a row.
2024 SEASON (As a Sophomore): Tied for fourth on the squad with 20 appearances and ranked fifth with a career-high 39 strikeouts… Posted a 1-2 record with a 6.75 ERA and one save in 29.1 innings… Collected his first collegiate save in a career-long four innings, securing the Aztecs’ 7-1 triumph over Portland (2-18-24)… Recorded a 3.38 ERA with 18 strikeouts against six walks over his final eight games, fanning at least one batter in consecutive outings during that stretch… Received his first starting assignment at CSUN, matching his collegiate bests with six strikeouts and four innings pitched… Held the Matadors scoreless during his stint but did not factor in the decision after scattering two hits and three walks (4-30-24)… Notched his first career victory in SDSU’s 8-4 home triumph over Air Force in the finale of a weekend series despite allowing one run on one hit and a walk in 1.1 innings (5-12-24)… Earned a spot on the Mountain West all-academic team and was named a conference scholar-athlete for the second year in a row… Also merited academic all-district recognition from College Sports Communicators (CSC).
2023 SEASON (As a Freshman): Saw action in nine games with two starts during his rookie campaign, posting an 0-1 record with a 7.71 ERA and 10 strikeouts in 11.2 innings… Earned a starting assignment in his Aztec debut, allowing one hit in one scoreless inning at UC Riverside (3-7-23)… Struck out two batters on three occasions, including an appearance in SDSU’s 5-2 home victory over UC San Diego when he tied his season-long with two innings pitched (4-11-23)… Did not allow a walk in that contest vs. the Tritons and duplicated that feat in three other contests… Was one of eight pitchers utilized by the Aztecs to combine for a shutout in the team’s 1-0 triumph over San Diego when he gave up just one hit in one inning of work (4-18-23)… Started the first two innings of SDSU’s final non-conference game of the year against UCSD (5-16-23)… Received Mountain West Scholar-Athlete recognition following the season.
PRIOR TO COLLEGE: Graduated from Vacaville High School where he won two varsity letters under head coach Stu Clary … Garnered first-team all-Monticello Empire League accolades after posting a 5-4 record with a team-best 1.71 ERA as a senior, according to MaxPreps … Struck out 68 batters against 23 walks in 49.0 innings … Received second-team all-Metro recognition for the Sacramento area as well … Chose the Aztecs over Cal State Fullerton and Sacramento State during the recruiting process … Also lettered in tennis as a prep and merited scholar-athlete distinction.
PERSONAL: Aidan Russell was born in Vacaville, California … Son of Jeff and Andrea Russell … Lists Clayton Kershaw as his favorite athlete … Enjoys mountain biking and golfing … Majoring in kinesiology at San Diego State with career plans to become a physical therapist.
